Gender norms and creating an inclusive environment regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity.
Dating is easy for some, hard for others.
Once sometime had been taken to understand the needs and considerations that the business should take into account. I was tasked with designing an experience to meet those needs. Before putting together any sort of visual components, a framework to move forward was created.
The framework shown outlines an inclusive experience that, for heterosexual dating, puts women in the driver seat allowing them to lead the decisions at every point of the speed dating video experience. (For LGBTQ+ dating, this flow still applies but is a little more fluid)
The culmination of work created an experience that is inclusive, entertaining, and cohesive experience that further pushes relationship-based culture over hook-up culture.
The experience starts with a brief Q&A "Icebreaker" session led by one party (the "driver") and answered by the other (the "passenger"). After each question is answered, the video feed of both parties is unblurred to slowly reveal who the other person might be. Once all questions have been answered, the driver has the opportunity to move forward with a 90 second video chat to better get to know the other person. Once the "video speed date" ends, both parties have the opportunity to let the other know that they're interested by extending to an unlimited video chat.
If at any point, the interest isn't there, both parties are shown new people.
This framework was inspired by speed dating in the real world and was chosen because of it's balance of entertainment-value and relationship-focus. The experience, while quick paced, creates opportunities for both parties to get to know each other without placing too much pressure on making the match work towards a relationship.
It was also decided that Say Allo Live would only be available during certain times of the week in an effort to provide daters with a wider range of people that they could be matched with.
As part of the process, we looked at ways to create a seamless onboarding experience that was straight forward.
The onboarding experience for Say Allo Live consists of 3 simple questions for the "driver", and 2 questions for the "passenger". These questions would allow us to get the necessary responses needed for the Q&A portion of the experience, but also let the dater know about any add-ons that could be used during the event. The onboarding experience could be filled out anytime between Say Allo Live Events, however, must be filled out before entering the event.
By asking daters these onboarding questions, we are able to mitigate the need to explore add-ons and purchase them during the round, causing disruptions to the timed aspects of this experience.
Dating can be more challenging for some than others. It was important that places within the framework that could use to create supporting and motivating touch points were found. It was also important that ground rules of what was acceptable and not acceptable during each Say Allo Live experience were set.
These additions helped to create the culture that Say Allo hopes to accomplish with it's app.
While dating is a very gendered experience, consideration into where we might create a more inclusive environment, particularly for LGBTQ+ daters was an important consideration.
The framework that was created allows the ability for LGBTQ+ daters to switch between "driver" and "passenger" roles within the experience. Thought into copy was also taken into account and gender-neutral pronouns were used where possible.
